The Future is Now

“Dread it. Run from it. Destiny arrives all the same.” – Thanos

And today, destiny has arrived in the form of Drake Maye. We knew Maye would likely start at some point this year, but weren’t sure when. While this will give the team and fanbase a boost of life, I still question if it’s the best move.

On one hand, if the reports that he is currently better than Jacoby Brissett are true, it makes sense for him to play. Also, the Pats want to see what they got in him, especially since they could get the first pick in the draft.

On the other hand, our offensive line and skill position players are terrible, we have a defensive head coach, a first-year OC, it’s only Week 6, and we are playing one of the best teams in the league. It’s not like he is going to be placed in a good situation that can honestly tell you how good he is. I fully expect him to play pretty bad because how can he not? There is literally nothing going for him, outside of his own natural talent. Caleb Williams and Bo Nix are in infintely better sitautons and even they have looked downright awful at times this year.

It just feels like Maye is being set up to fail. Even worse, our offensive line is so bad, he’s guaranteed to take a bunch of hits and maybe even get hurt. It just seems like the type of situation that can ruin a young QB’s confidence before he can even develop any. If Maye plays well then that’s great, but if he plays poorly, that really tells you nothing because his situation is so bad. And once you put him in, you really can’t take him out for the rest of the year unless he’s hurt, otherwise you risk ruining his confidence even more.

Once again, it’s a lose-lose situation and I know that Mayo is in a tough spot. Still, I would elect to keep him on the bench for the time being. I do hope I’m wrong and that he plays his ass off.

Patriots Season Preview

The Patriots are currently at the beginning of a full on rebuild so expectations are low. Hopefully last year was rock bottom and we see improvement this year. The biggest thing we need to see is improvement offensively. I don’t know how much Drake Maye will play, but we obviously want him to look good if he does. I think Maye will start playing around the mid season mark so the Pats can see what they have in him. The young wide receivers and offensive lineman we have ideally get experience and develop a lot this year too. The offense will likely start slow but gain momentum as the season goes on.

The defense has been a strength so we want them to keep playing well. Expect a great season from Christian Gonzalez who played well before a season ending injury last year. It will also be interesting to see if anyone can replace Matthew Judon as a premier pass rusher. The Pats defense should be at worst average and will be the strength of the team.

Finally, we want to see that Jerrod Mayo can coach. He is replacing the greatest coach of all time so it doesn’t get harder than that. As a part of the dynasty as a player, he knows what it takes to win here so I have belief that he can have a similar positive impact that DeMeco Ryans had on the Texans last year.

I think the Patriots go 6-11 and finish last in their division. In addition to rebuilding, they have the hardest schedule in the NFL, so they get no break whatsoever. This should net them a top 10 draft pick and allow them to get another great young player to help build their team up. This year might be tough at times, but unlike last year we should have some things that give us hope for a great future.

Drake Maye Ridiculousness

Quick blog to get my thoughts out. People freaking out about Drake Maye playing bad during TRAINING CAMP is the peak definition of July/August being slow sports months. There isn’t much to talk about, so everyone wants to over exaggerate to get attention and make headlines. Maye is a rookie on a rebuilding team – there’s going to be growing pains. The Pats drafted him at 3 for a reason. They want him to grow and develop over time. The idiotic talk of Joe Milton being better is crazy. Milton played in college for 6 years and only started once for a reason. He has an amazing arm that looks good during training camp when he can’t be sacked. Once full-speed games start being played, it’ll be obvious he’s not the guy. People need to calm down and be patient.

Drake Maye vs Mac Jones

There are many reasons why most Patriots fans, including myself, believe Drake Maye will fair much better than Mac Jones. Below are my reasons, some obvious and some not so much.

Drake Maye has much more talent than Mac Jones. Physically he is slightly bigger at 6’4″, 230 lbs vs Mac at 6’3″ 220. He also is much more athletic and has such a better arm than Mac does.

Maye also produced in a much harder situation than Mac. Mac was aided by the greatest college football coach ever and maybe the greatest wide receiver room in college football history. Maye dealt with much more difficulty and still stood out.

Maye seems like intangibly he is also better than Mac. Mac had a tendency to pout and have poor body language, whereas Maye seems to have a better attitude, which I think is important. When the going gets tough, you want a QB who weathers the storm instead of complaining about the storm.

For all of Mac’s shortcomings, he really had no help offensively, as the Pats have had the worst offensive skill talent in the league since Brady left and their offensive line play was poor too. They are still very much a work in progress, but they did use significant draft capital on WRs and Oline this year. Hopefully, the Pats will continue to build the offense around Maye and give him viable options and protection.

Maye also benefits from not being the heir apparent franchise QB to Tom Brady. That is nearly an impossible role to live up to and Mac didn’t come close. Now that Pats fans have endured a couple shitty seasons, their expectations are not as high as the immediate Post-Brady era.

This will be the most controversial, but I think Maye will actually benefit from not having the greatest coach of all time lead the Patriots. The Bill vs Tom debate created lots of controversy and pressure for everyone in Foxboro. I believe it influenced Bill to go for broke in terms of winning and he simply tried a quick reload, instead of a full on rebuild that the Pats realistically needed. Now that he’s gone, they can focus on rebuilding correctly and getting back to winning championships.

2023 College Football Predictions

I admittedly know the NFL much better than CFB, so these predictions will not be as extensive or in depth as my NFL ones. But I got nothing to lose, so I mine as well make them:

CFP Seeds

1: Georgia Bulldogs

The back to back National Champions have a new QB and have lost a lot of talent the past two drafts. However, a cupcake schedule, amazing coach, and roster still loaded with talent warrants Georgia winning the SEC and being the top seed in the CFP again.

2: Ohio State

Ohio State will also have to break in a new QB but their coaching and offensive skill players are so good, I see them thriving regardless. We have seen them bring in a new QB countless times and not skip a beat.

3. Clemson

Dabo is still one of the best coaches in all of college football and Cade Klubnik has the chance to be really special for the Tigers. Combining that with a relatively easy schedule and motivation from not making the past two CFP, I see Clemson returning to the Playoff.

4: Michigan:

Unlike many other top programs, Michigan returns a proven starter at QB. They also have one of best running back duos in the country and still have a very physical O-line and defense.

CFP Semifinals

#1 Georgia vs #4 Michigan

In a rematch of the Orange Bowl two seasons ago, I think Michigan finally matches up well with Georgia and gets by them this year.

#2 Ohio State vs #3 Clemson

Ohio State will simply be too explosive and too much for Clemson and will bulldoze its way into the CFP Championship game.

CFP Championship

#2 Ohio State vs #4 Michigan

THE (championship) GAME! In an all-time CFP Final, Michigan gets revenge on Ohio State for beating them earlier in the year and gets their first National Title this century.

Heisman Winner

Drake Maye, QB North Carolina: There is no doubt Maye will put up numbers, but the big question surrounding him winning the award is if his team will win enough. I think they win 9 or 10 games against a pretty weak schedule and that combined with great statistics gives UNC their first ever Heisman winner.
