CFB Week 8 Reaction

5 Georgia @ 1 Texas

Georgia with a huge win in an extremely unique game. This shows the good side of realignment where two all-time programs play each other in a primetime top 5 matchup.

For Georgia, they don’t look as dominant as they have the past three years. But they still look like the best team in a loaded SEC. Even with Carson Beck not playing his best, they thoroughly outplayed Texas. Their strength continues to be an absurd defense with future NFL players all around it.

Texas’s season is very much still alive. If this is their only loss, they easily still make the playoff. It’ll be interesting to see how they handle everything internally.

Sark removing Quinn Ewers so early was kind of ridiculous. But once you put Arch in, stick it out instead of taking him out right away. Now you hurt both QBs confidence and create a controversy moving forward. They need to pick one and commit to them moving forward. I think Ewers is the guy right now due to his experience. He’s still shaking off rust from injury. The remainder of the schedule is not easy since it’s the SEC, but they should be able to right the ship and Quinn should get back to playing well.

7 Alabama @ 11 Tennessee

Bama is in a tough spot now. They really have no way to make the conference championship game. Their one avenue to the playoff is to win out, look impressive, and hope their resume is good enough to get an at large bid. This is exactly why great teams like them can’t afford brutal losses to teams like Vandy. The SEC is so good, you’re nearly guaranteed to lose 1 or 2 games to great teams. Any extra losses just tank your season.

Tennessee finds themselves in a pretty good spot moving forward. Their one tough remaining opponent is Georgia. If they can pull that off they are likely in the SEC Championship. Even if that is the one loss they have, this Bama win gives them a strong case for the playoff.

24 Michigan @ 22 Illinois

The emphatic nail in Michigan’s already brutal season. They lose by 14 points to a team that had 80 yards passing. They are in rebuild mode and I’m betting they’ll be back to great in a couple years. Illinois is sneaky good this year. They have a big next game vs Oregon. If they pull off the upset, they have a clear rode to the Big 10 Championship.

College Football Week 7

South Carolina @ 7 Alabama

Alabama has such a wide range of performance. At their ceiling, they can beat anyone, like when they put up a 28-0 lead on Georgia and beat them. At their floor, they can lose to teams they absolutely should beat, like Vanderbilt. With so many good teams in the SEC, that isn’t the consistency needed to win the conference and win the Natty.

Saturday was the perfect example of their floor where they let a much worse USC team hang around. USC failed on a 2-point conversion to tie the game, despite a wide open receiver their QB simply missed. That should have been the game. Instead, Bama botches the onside kick and gave USC another chance to win the game. If they keep playing this way in the SEC, they won’t make the conference championship.

I also do not see Jalen Milroe as a legitimate NFL prospect. He came into this week as Mel Kiper’s #2 QB which I think is crazy. He is not a consistent enough passer and makes too many poor decisions with the football to be great in the NFL. He is such a good athlete that he may eventually be able to develop into a good NFL QB with the right coach, but it’s a long shot. I think Shedeur Sanders and Quinn Ewers are the clear cut top two prospects and after that there is much more uncertainty.

1 Texas vs 18 Oklahoma

QB Quinn Ewers looked shaky early. He got better as the game went on, but will need to play better if they want to beat Georgia. If he was more settled, this would have been a bigger blow out. There will be noise this week about Arch Manning playing over Ewers. A bad performance against Georgia will only make those voices louder.

Texas’s defense led the way and played great the whole game. They put the offense in position to score so many times. The offense missed many opportunities to put the game away earlier.

Oklahoma’s defense is great, but the offense could not keep up. Their QB should be good once he develops more, but he could not handle Texas’s defense, especially with his top FIVE wide receivers out.

2 Ohio State at 3 Oregon

This game lived up to the hype. Both teams are so even, either could have pulled out the win. I believe these are the two best teams in the Big 10 and they will meet in the championship game, with Ohio State getting revenge.

9 Ole Miss at 13 LSU

Another awesome night game that was overshadowed by the Big 10 showdown mentioned above. LSU saved their SEC title hopes with the win and ended Ole Miss’s chance to make it. The SEC is super close right now and Texas A&M, Texas, and LSU are the only SEC teams without a conference loss.

College Football Week 6

1 Alabama @ Vanderbilt

Bama with one of the most shocking upsets of the year. A week after pulling off a season defining win, they now have a loss that will follow them all year. They might not be able to lose one more time this year if they want to make the playoffs.

Gotta love the Vandy fans taking the goalpost down Broadway and throwing it in the river. Nashville was probably POPPING last night.

4 Tennessee @ Arkansas

Another massive SEC upset. TN has looked so good this year, it’s sad to see them lose to a much worse team. That’s what makes the SEC so hard to play in.

8 Miami @ California

Unlike the above teams, Miami staved off an upset with one of the greatest comebacks in recent memory. Cam Ward’s draft and Heisman stock keeps rising.

10 Michigan @ Washington

Washington gets revenge by ending Michigan’s shot at making the playoff. It’s crazy that the two teams who made the championship game last year have both fallen off so much.

11 USC @ Minnesota

USC’s season is also over with this loss to Minnesota. As good as Lincoln Riley is, his USC teams continuously disappoint and have bad losses.

College Football Week 5 Recap

Virginia Tech (2-3) @ 7 Miami (5-0)

Miami is lucky to get out of this one with a win. Viginia Tech outplayed them and really deserved to win. I have no clue what happened on that last play of the game. But I do know there was not enough evidence to overturn it. It was called a TD, and should’ve stayed a TD. If it had been called an incomplete pass, then it should’ve stayed an incomplete pass.

Cam Ward had his struggles, but also showed resilience. Despite 3 turnovers, he still had 400 total yards and 5 total TDs and led his team back from a 10 point 4th quarter deficit.

Kentucky (3-2) @ 6 Ole Miss (4-1)

Kentucky with one of the biggest upsets this season. The SEC is gonna have so many teams good enough to make the Playoff each year. Way less of them will make it then are worthy because the SEC is so good, losses like this will inevitably happen and keep good teams out.

21 Oklahoma (4-1) @ Auburn (2-3)

Auburn with an absolutely brutal loss. They had this game in hand and absolutely blew it. Auburn’s QB situation is absolutely terrible and is fucking over this team. Oklahoma saved their season and may have found their new QB.

4 Georgia (4-1) @ 2 Alabama (5-0)

😳

Game. Of. The. Year.

A top 5 matchup that delivered everything we could’ve hoped for and more:

High scoring affair ✅

28 Point Comeback ✅

Late game lead changes ✅

Mayhem and crazy plays until the very end ✅

Last minute interception in the endzone to seal the game ✅

I was in shock watching the game. At first, I couldn’t believe Bama was crushing Georgia so bad. Then I didn’t even register how crazy Georgia’s comeback was once they started playing like themselves. By the time it registered that they came back to take the lead, Bama already scored to retake it. Then Georgia marched down and nearly took the lead back.

Absolute madness and everything we love about CFB.

College Football Week 4 Recap

6 Tennessee (4-0) @ 15 Oklahoma (3-1)

Tennessee looks so good this year. Their coach, QB, and whole team look like they can compete to win it all. Nico didn’t even play out of his mind yesterday and they still won by 10 points on the road vs another good team.

11 USC (2-1) @ 18 Michigan (3-1)

Michigan saves their season with a win yesterday. They did it in classic Big 10 style with their QB only throwing for 32 yards. I just don’t see this type of play style leading to wins vs better teams like Ohio State.

NC State (2-2) @ 22 Clemson (2-1)

In their two games since losing to Georgia, Clemson looks like a team on a mission. They are playing so well and very much can compete to win the ACC.

Baylor (2-2) @ Colorado (3-1)

Say what you want about Colorado, but they find a way to make games exciting. I genuinely don’t know how Travis Hunter manages to play the entire game and do it at such a high level. He is absolutely insane and my current Heisman pick.

College Football Week 3 Recap

Arizona (2-1) 7 @ Kansas State (3-0) 31

Kansas State with a statement win that could make them the highest ranked team in the Big 12.

Memphis (3-0) 20 @ Florida State (0-3) 12

FSU’s downfall this year has been absolutely shocking. To be 0-3 this is fast and look awful while doing it, is absolutely brutal.

Alabama (3-0) 42 @ Wisconsin (2-1) 10

Bama is still a force to reckoned with and Jalen Milroe is playing great this year.

LSU (2-1) 36 @ South Carolina (2-1) 33

Game of the year so far.

USC really deserved to win that one, but that’s college football for you. LaNorris Sellers balled out and USC dominated the game when he was healthy. Sellers getting hurt was a huge turning point, but USC also hurt themselves (stupid blindside block that negated a pick 6) and had some bad calls go against them (non existent OPI call that negated a huge passing play).

LSU has some incredible talent. TE Mason Taylor looks like he could be a beast at the next level. LB Harold Perkins reminds me of Micah Parsons where he could be a stud at both LB and Edge Rusher in the NFL. Freshman running back Caden Durham looked great too.

LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier switches back and forth from good to head scratching but if he figures it out, LSU could be dangerous. One thing LSU really needs to work on is their red zone efficiency. If they miss out on so many opportunities vs a team like Georgia or Bama, they won’t win those games.

Boston College (2-1) 21 @ Missouri (3-0) 27

Bill O’Brien has BC playing great. They put up a fight vs a great SEC team on the road and almost pulled it out.

Oregon (3-0) 49 @ Oregon State (2-1) 14

Oregon fans can breathe a sigh of relief. After looking bad the past two weeks, they dismantle their rival on the road. This is the exact win they needed.

Notre Dame (2-1) 66 @ Purdue (1-1) 7

Notre Dame decided they were sick of hearing about their loss to Northern IL and took it out on Purdue by putting up 66. They did it with power, putting up 362 yards and 6 TDs on the ground.

Texas A&M (2-1) 33 @ Florida (1-2) 20

You have to feel for Florida. They have a lame duck coach and the most brutal schedule in the country. At least FSU sucks too.

Washington State (3-0) 24 @ Washington (2-1) 19

WSU gets their revenge on Washington for ditching the Pac-12. This was a great game that came down to the very end. Long term though, Washington is in a much better spot than WSU. Despite, WSU and Oregon State trying to rebuild the Pac-12, it’s unlikely it will be a relevant conference on par with the Power 4 ever again.

Georgia (3-0) 13 @ Kentucky (1-2) 12

Those grey UK uniforms looked so good for the night game. SEC games are hard to win and while Georgia would’ve liked to play better, the important thing is that they pulled out the win.

UTSA (1-2) 7 @ Texas (3-0) 56

Arch manning played great, showing Texas has a bright future. If Ewers is healthy, he will continue to be their starting QB. There are still two big impacts from the Ewers injury. First off, Texas has likely proven it should be #1 given this blowout with a backup QB. Second, Ewers has now dealt with an injury all 3 years he’s been a starter. Does this hurt his draft stock?

Kent State (0-3) 0 @ Tennessee (3-0) 71

Just a brutal blowout all around. I don’t know if TN has something against Kent State, but this seemed personal.

College Football Blue Blood Programs

We often hear of the Blue Blood programs when it comes to college basketball, but not so much with college football even though there clearly is a hierarchy in the sport. Below are the CFB Blue Bloods according to us (not in any particular order):

  • Alabama (SEC)
  • Georgia (SEC)
  • LSU (SEC)
  • Florida (SEC)
  • Oklahoma (SEC)
  • Texas (SEC)
  • Clemson (ACC)
  • FSU (ACC)
  • Miami (ACC)
  • Notre Dame (Independent)
  • Ohio State (Big 10)
  • Michigan (Big 10)
  • Penn State (Big 10)
  • USC (Big 10)
  • Nebraska (Big 10)

Derrick Henry’s Underrated Football Career

Derrick Henry may have the greatest total football career of any player ever and it never gets talked about.

In high school, he rushed for 12,124 yards (most by a high school player ever) and 153 rushing TDs (5th most ever, which is crazy to imagine 4 guys have scored more than that). He did all this playing high school football in Florida no less, one of the best football states in the country. His senior year, he set a state-record 4,261 yards and 55 touchdowns. In four years, he averaged 252.6 YPG, 8.7 YPA, and never rushed for fewer than 100 yards in a game. He was a High School All-American, a 5 Star recruit, and ranked the No. 1 athlete in the nation in 2013.

He went on to play for the Nick Saban coached Alabama Crimson Tide, which is the greatest college football dynasty of all-time. As a junior, he set the SEC rushing yards and TDs record and led the country in rushing yards and TDs. He won the Heisman Trophy, the Doak Walker award (best running back), the Maxwell Award (best player), Walter Camp Award (also best player), was a unanimous All-American, SEC OPOY, and led the Tide to the National Championship. He ranks 2nd all time in rushing yards and TDs in Bama history.

His NFL career is still going, but so far he’s rushed for 1,000+ yards 5 times, 2000 yards once, 10+ TDs 6 times, and led the league in rushing yards and TDs twice. He is a 4-time Pro Bowler, 2-time All-Pro, and was the 2020 OPOY. He is 13th all-time in rushing TDs and has the most career games with 200+ rushing yards.

He is one of the few players to be a high school All-American, college All-American, and NFL All-Pro. He is the only player to have 2,000 yard rushing seasons in high school, college, and the NFL. Any way you cut it, he has had an absolutely insane career and I can’t think of a football player who has utterly dominated from high school to the pros as much as he has.

NFL Week 1 and CFB Week 2 Reaction

CFB

3 Alabama vs 11 Texas

Jalen Milroe is not a QB Alabama can rely on. He consistently did not make good decisions and is not a good enough passer to throw Bama back into games they are losing. On the flip side, Quinn Ewers played like a 1st round pick. He made big throws and made plays in big moments to lead Texas to victory.

Is this the end of the Alabama dynasty? Texas has much better skill position players than Bama and it showed Saturday. It is no coincidence that two of the biggest opponents to the transfer portal and/or NIL have been Saban and Dabo Sweeney and their programs have fallen off somewhat the past couple years. The transfer portal and NIL have started a new era of college football. Schools and coaches must either adapt or die.

22 Colorado vs Nebraska

Colorado keeps giving us reasons to think they’re legit. They didn’t even play that well and still beat a Nebraska team with a good defense 36-14. They should beat Colorado St. next week and have two straight tough tests with Oregon and USC back to back.

Nebraska QB Jeff Simms is hurting his team. Simms was responsible for FOUR fumbles (3 of which were lost) and threw an awful pick. If he doesn’t play that bad, Nebraska would’ve had a chance.

NFL

Patriots vs. Eagles

The Pats got off to such a shitty start and were not dynamic enough on offense to comeback. Mac Jones showed why he isn’t elite by squandering good field position multiple times when his team needed him. However, it was still a promising game as their defense played great and their offense looked way better than last year. If they can play like they did the last 3 quarters, they can fight for a playoff spot.

Eagles DT Jalen Carter was said to be the most talented player in the draft and he showed why Sunday. He had the most pressures of any player and looks like a force to be reckoned with.

Loved seeing Brady getting honored. Seems like there will be multiple honors for him, including inducting him into the Patriots HOF on 6/12/2024 (6 for the 6 Super Bowls he won with the Pats, 12 for his number). Of course, there will be his jersey retirement and statue unveiling too. Seeing all the fans and former teammates there shows how great of a player and person he was. Makes me realize how good us Pats fans had it and wish I appreciated it more.

Jets vs. Bills

The pregame ceremony was absolutely awesome. Seeing Aaron Rodgers run out with the American Flag was great and there was no better stadium to the host Sunday and Monday night games.

As a Pats fan, I genuinely feel bad for Jets fans. You never want to see a great player go down, especially when they just joined a new team. Here’s to hoping Rodgers makes a speedy recovery and comes back in full force next year.

Both the Jets and Bills have such great defenses, along with the Patriots. Putting up points against AFC East teams is going to be tough this year.

Josh Allen NEEDS to stop taking hits. He is a superstar quarterback, but if he keeps taking all these unnecessary hits, he is going to have a short career. His reckless play was evident in his 4 turnovers and general carelessness with the ball. He is amazing but needs to stop trying to be Superman.

Breece Hall is a great player and Zach Wilson still is not. The Jets will compete with their talent, but they will not make the playoffs with Wilson.

Overall

Picks: 2-2 (6-5 Overall)

Spread: 3-1 (8-3)

O/U: 1-2-1 (3-7-1)

NFL Week 1 and CFB Week 2 Preview

The King returns as the NFL season kicks off. CFB is back for Week 2 with some intriguing non-conference matchups.

CFB

3 Alabama vs 11 Texas

The game of the week between the two biggest brands in college football. After easy opening games, both teams are looking to prove something this week. Bama wants to show it is still dominant and new QB Jalen Milroe is the guy. Texas and Quinn Ewers want to show they are a CFP contender who can make some noise. I think Alabama wins this game, but does not cover (-7) and the under (53.5) hits.

22 Colorado vs Nebraska

This is Colorado’s chance to show last week was not a fluke. They face a team that also has a notable new coach in Matt Rhule, who is trying to return Nebraska to its glory days. Colorado’s offense looks so high powered and I don’t think a Nebraska team that looked flat last week will be able to keep up. Colorado wins, covers (-3), and the under (59) hits.

NFL

Patriots vs. Eagles

The Pats and Eagles square off in a rematch of Super Bowl LII. It’s an opportunity for the Pats to show that a real OC has given them back a real offense. Jalen Hurts and Co. will try to avoid a Super Bowl hangover and show last year wasn’t a fluke. The biggest storyline is the return of Tom Brady to New England. As a Pats fan, it’ll be great to see him back home and getting honored but… is there something more at play? Could they be trying to bring Tom back in some capacity as an emergency player, future exec, or something else? I fucking hope so. Regardless, I think the Eagles win, cover (-4), and the over hits (45).

Jets vs. Bills

Aaron Rodgers makes his debut in the Big Apple. The honeymoon period is officially over and now it’s all about winning games. Unfortunately for Jets fans, the Bills are a better football team with more chemistry. I think the Bills win, cover (-2.5), and the over (45.5) hits.
